Croydon students participate in new initiative - croydon.com
Following a successful bid, four Croydon schools worked together on an exciting and challenging project: croydon.com.
Co-ordinated by Croydon EBP, the project focused on developing Key Stage 4 students' knowledge, understanding and skills of enterprise and e-commerce linked to the world of manufacturing. The brief was to design, manufacture, market and sell airline in-flight products for young passengers.
Each school adopted an area in which they had particular strengths. Students studying Graphic Products at Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls split into smaller groups to form companies to design the products. Resistant Materials students at Edenham High School had responsibility for the manufacturing process, with Business Studies students from Selsdon High School and Addington High School marketing and selling the goods via the creation of a web site.
Zotefoams, a local company, supported the activities by providing materials (Plastazote foam), technical support, information packs and INSET for teaching staff.
This project, which introduced both teachers and students to the benefits of team working, problem solving and working with a variety of IT packages as well as interaction with local business partners, could also be run over a much shorter period, Edenham High School ran an extremely successful Enterprise week for Year 9 students, encompassing all the elements of the croydon.com project, and aspects could be adapted as part of D&T Week in June.
For more details on this project please see the article on the croydon.com project (DATA Practice Magazine Jan 2006)
Wednesday 7th December saw the culmination of the Year of the Volunteer with CEBP's Celebration Dinner held at Selsdon Hall. The Mayor of Croydon presented certificates to each table thanking our business partners for their outstanding contributions throughout the year. Many thanks to all the students who contributed towards such a successful evening. Speakers at the event included:
This was a fantastic opportunity for us to thank our business volunteers for their continuing support throughout 2005.
Musical accompaniment during the meal was provided by St Andrew's CofE High School Ensemble and students from the BRIT School were comperes for the evening. Students from Selsdon High School, Stanley Technical High School and Addington High School were our waiters - all Young Apprentices in Hospitality.
